When Is Bins ? - A Light-Hearted Look at our Domestic Refuse Collection System

Editor's note: See recent update 23.11.25 at the end of the main article for the latest news on the new UK.GOV plans for reorganising recycling collections....if you're waiting for a new food bin, don't hold your breath.... ---------------------------- As one of the more incisive questions of our age, "When is Bins ?" definitely deserves some attention…and hopefully a reliable and effective solution for those afflicted by the recent changes (i.e. most of us!). In days of old, life was much simpler when it came to getting our rubbish collected…. The majority of households had just one dustbin. We put it out for the dustmen (as we affectionately referred to them in those balmy 'pre-pc' days) on the same day each week, and with a bit of luck it got emptied sometime on that day.  Life is much more complicated nowadays when it comes to dealing with our domestic waste. The advent of recycling and climate change awareness, which admittedly was overdue  an...

Norovirus Epidemic – Prospects and Vaccine Development

'Norovirus' (otherwise known as the 'winter vomiting bug') is the term in general use to describe the symptoms of an unpleasant stomach complaint caused by a virus.  This isn’t a new virus, in contrast with the causative agent of Covid19 i.e SARS-CoV-2. Many of us will already have been exposed to Norovirus during our lifetimes. It’s certainly not a ‘nice to have’, particularly for the very young and the elderly. Its incidence is to some extent seasonal, and the virus does seem to be gaining the upper hand this winter, with significant numbers catching it in UK, hence the recent reports in the news media. There have been quite a few consequent hospital admissions over the last few weeks, hence the use of the term 'epidemic' in the press. The NHS is concerned about a rapid influx of new patients, at a time when it's already stretched to the limit,  if the situation continues to worsen. The recent surge in admissions hospitals are already facing due to an em...

UK Income Tax and the 2025 Budget: Did She or Didn’t She ?

As a follow-up to the budget, and my recent pre-budget blog on the likelihood of Income Tax rises, I’ve tried to answer the simple question in the title i.e. Did Labour break their manifesto promises by raising the rate of one of the 3 main taxes – i.e. Income Tax, NI or VAT ? The short answer to this question is...Yes, they did, despite their protestations to the contrary.  Read on to find out why..... November' budget was a complex affair, and seemed almost to be designed to confuse. It was widely anticipated by industry and the general population as a "death by a thousand taxes", and certainly lived up to the prediction. Much was made of sticking to manifesto promises, almost to the point of obsession by the Party, in the weeks before the budget, to the extent that Reeves was eventually forced to 'chicken out' of her planned 2p across the board rises in all 3 rates of income tax in order to head off a widely anticipated rebellion by her 'unruly'...

UK Local By-Election results as a Barometer of National Political Fortunes

Image
Making long term predictions about political outcomes nationally is a risky process indeed. In some ways it’s comparable to weather forecasting – the earth’s atmosphere is a chaotic system and trying to predict its behaviour locally more than 2 or 3 days ahead with any degree of accuracy still presents us with many uncertainties, despite all our advances in predictive technology (including even AI!). And we’ve all seen recently how long a week is in politics nowadays, let alone a month, or indeed 3 years - chaos seems to reign there, also. Although 2029 is thus a very long way ahead from a political point of view, and Labour's leadership and cabinet teams will be focused on more immediate policy decisions, their advance planners will already be thinking hard, and I suspect with some trepidation, about their electoral prospects…and not solely for the next general election. After the hammering both major parties took in the May 2025 local elections, largely at the hands of Fa...
